ALAMN COOKIE CART COMMUNITY SERVICE EVENT RECAP On Tuesday, August 16, 2016, ALAMN members and business partners had a great time working with the teen employees at the Cookie Cart bakery in Minneapolis. Cookie Cart was started in 1988 by Sister Jean as a safe, secure and engaging space for North Minneapolis’ youth. She saw the need to engage the neighborhood’s young people in educational and empowering activities. Cookie Cart provides teens 15 to 18 years old with lasting and meaningful work, life and leaderships skills through experience and training in this urban nonprofit bakery. The bakery is a classroom that teaches essential employment skills; managing work schedules, taking direction from supervisors, efficient task completion and other problem solving skills. Other skills learned are customer service training, resume and cover letter writing, financial literacy training, and learning about employer expectations. Today’s event focused on scooping cookie dough with the students, enjoying a pizza lunch, and conducting mock interviews. ALAMN volunteers and students had experiences to share from both side of the interviewing desk, and everyone had fun. Teens were also provided with swag bags from donations from members and business partners. The bags included pens, bags, USB/flash, screen wipes, notepads, gum, chocolate, tumbler glasses, post-it notes, pad folios, wallets, notebooks, pins, luggage tags, hot/cold packs and more generously donated by members and business partners. Thank you to the following swag bag donators: Many thanks to our wonderful volunteers at today’s event: Wendy Cornelius Metropolitan Airports Commission If you are interested in helping support this great program either in person, or by purchasing their cookies, you can contact them at 612-521-0855 or [email protected].
